CPA, Realtor®, Investor, Mentor
Carla DeWitt began her real estate career over 18 years ago. After 20 years in the tax business, she was looking for a new challenge. After investigating, and trying, several alternatives, she came to the realization that she wanted a business that provided big paydays, a limited time investment and no need for employees. Real estate fit the bill.
Over the years Carla has bought and sold many houses in the Indianapolis area. With her accounting background, the numbers side of the business is a no-brainer, and she specializes in creative deal structuring. Carla went on to get her real estate license, and is now a managing broker and a member of MIBOR, her local board of Realtors.
Wanting to share her knowledge and experience, Carla began a class on Creative Deal Structuring, and found she really enjoyed teaching. She now works one-on-one with a limited number of coaching clients helping them build their real estate businesses. She also consults on a deal-by-deal basis with investors looking for assistance in buying or selling a particular property.
Carla DeWitt is a CPA with over 35 years in the tax business. After graduating with honors with a BS in Accounting from the University of Denver, Carla went to work in the Milwaukee office of Arthur Andersen & Co., one of the international Big Eight accounting firms. Recognizing her talent, Carla was quickly selected to work on the international tax team, where she specialized in tax preparation and planning for multinational companies and their employees. Carla spent two tax seasons in the Toronto office preparing both US and Canadian tax returns for AA&Co’s clients’ US expatriates.
While in Milwaukee, Carla worked with Junior Achievement, joined a Toastmasters group and took ballet lessons twice a week. She also volunteered to work on the office’s holiday party committees, and organized highly successful events for both the tax department at 150 guests, and the following year for the entire office with 600 guests.
Carla moved home to Indianapolis for family reasons and eventually went to work for Katz, Sapper & Miller, a large local accounting firm where she was the only non-partner with signature authority on tax returns. While at Katz, Carla obtained her CFP designation and started the firm’s financial planning practice. During her tenure she also helped start the firm’s 401(k) plan and had the opportunity to testify as an expert witness before the Department of Justice on behalf of one of her clients. Carla, however, considers her greatest accomplishment at Katz to be getting the women in the office included in the company’s annual golf outing.
Carla quickly became involved with her community joining the Indianapolis Women’s Rotary and the women’s auxiliary group of the Indianapolis Ballet Theater (IBT), the Wing. Carla was elected as President of the Wing, and was eventually asked to join the Board of IBT where she served as Treasurer.
Today, Carla serves on the Board of Directors of The German-American Klub of Indianapolis where she gets to connect with her roots. She also is on the Board of The Franciscan Hermitage, where she taught a monthly class on The Law of Attraction from 2009 through 2012.
Over the years Carla has owned several successful businesses including a fine dining restaurant (Johnson County Line), an apartment rehab company (Rehab Pros, Inc.), and an accounting practice association (DeWitt & DeWitt).
Never leaving her first love, Carla still has her own boutique tax practice, working primarily with real estate investors and small business owners. She was the technical editor for the 5th edition of Accounting for Dummies and is a member of the National Association of Tax Professionals. During tax season, she also works for Fiscal Tax Company.
Carla spends her spare time playing with Rancher, her Australian shepherd, reading, working puzzles and walking the Fall Creek Greenway. Her best friend and business partner, Tim Helmick Sr., just happens to also be the love of her life.
